Parker Debate Team Travels to Long Beach: Recap & Photo Dump

From September 27th to the 30th Parker School’s debate team traveled to Long Beach, California for a tournament. We had competitors in several speech and debate events. First, in debate, we had, Laynie, Noah, Oscar, Sophia S., Soren, Michael, Lance, and Sofia M. Next in PF, Takumi, BJ, Georgia, Siena, Kinloch, and Hana competed. Lastly, in congressional debate, there were Ava, Vincent, Angela, and Selah. For speech events, Gibson competed in both impromptu and duo interpretation with Liam.

The weekend away of course started with a quick stop at In n Out then we went straight to our hotel. After getting a well-needed night’s rest we got up and went straight to CA State University Long Beach, where the tournament was held. Most of us had rounds from the morning until late in the afternoon so we were all exhausted by the time we were done. The next day we found out that Soren and Oscar had broken in LD, then Gibson in impromptu. After being paired against each other in the double-octo-final round, Oscar moved on with a “walkover” which is a concept where a coach must choose a debater to proceed. After, Oscar won his octo-final round 3-0 before unfortunately losing in his semifinal round, placing him 6th overall. Overall, we ended with Soren as a double octo-finalist, Gibson as a semi-finalist, and Oscar as a quarter-finalist who placed 6th. Monday was our last day in California so we went to Huntington Beach after eating breakfast together. Many of us went shopping, walked along the pier, and played beach volleyball. Overall, the weekend was so fun and we all enjoyed both debating and having some time for ourselves. Great job to everyone who competed–whether you placed or not, everyone did their best and I’m glad we started this debate season with such a fun tournament!
